Urban League and The Dallas Women’s Foundation Challenge the Impressions of Black Females in Media

Over two hundred attendees filled in the Aloft Hotel in Dallas this past Friday evening to hear award winning writer and founder of Truth in Reality keynote speaker Sil Lai Abrams address the challenges surrounding gender bias in media. The Dallas Women’s Foundation partnered with the Dallas Urban League Young Professionals in hosting this special event to discuss the biases and stereotypes placed on women of color in the media.

A panel of industry leaders deliberated on how these misconceptions can lead to a diminished presence in positions of power and leadership in business and government. Panelists included Nikki Woods, Sr. Producer of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, Kim Clemons, AMS Pictures, Dawn Neufeld, VH1 Football Wives, Tammy Nguyen Lee, founder of Against the Grain Productions, Anita Marcos, founder Marcos Productions, and Gauthami Vemula, founder of Color Me Safe.

The 'Gender in Media' forum was the vision of DULYP Strategic Alliance Chair and Dallas Women’s employee Akilah Wallace to “elevate awareness of gender bias and stereotyping in media.” Among the crowd were local media personalities Latoya Silmon from Fox4 News and CW33 Nightcap anchorwoman, and Dallas Weekly Beat Beauty Amanda Fitzpatrick.
